HBO to Get Bigger and Broader (Like Netflix) as It Braces for 'Tough' Year
441The New York Times released an article today exploring the changes that HBO is going through in an effort to compete with Netflix for viewers and content. This comes directly on the heels of the recent AT&T/Time Warner merger. John Stankey, a longtime AT&T executive is now overseeing HBO in his new role as chief executive of Warner Media, and he is the one who is driving this need to substantially increase their subscriber base and the number of hours that viewers spend watching its shows. The drive will mean an increase in content and a change of approach to seeing the pay service and on demand service as more than just a boutique operation and something broader in scope.
Jeff Sneider and Dennis Tzeng sit down to talk about this news and if they agree that this is the right move for the pay channel service. They also speculate on what it might mean for Netlfix and other streaming services if HBO and other pay channel services start to adjust their approach as well.
