HD: Let's Play Dear Esther [Part 1] Intro
A literal WALKthrough as that is all you do in this game walk and look around. Sounds bad but somehow it isn't. At all. Skip to 6:24 to jump to gameplay (Skip my overview/ description).

I playthrough this experience of "Game Art" and give my thoughts a commentary and walkthrough, though there is no objective as such and no puzzles to solve as such. There is no shooting no point and click, no characters except the landscape the noises the objects and no animals except a gull and fient outlines of possibilities of creatures (flies on the water).
There is no interaction with objects outside the visual interaction and interpretation of the "player" or in this case the observer.
This video part 1 is an introduction to the game the background behind it a first impressions a partial review and overview. The first 6 Minutes are snippets from opinions and details of the history, formation and fruition of the game. From Half Life 2 Mod to Fully Fledged and magnificently realized independent game by the Chinese room, picked up in 2009 by one of the lead level designers of Mirror's Edge.
Dear Esther is a poetic experience both visually and audibly. The dialogue is ambiguous and highly poetic, the music score haunting and poineint, the visuals beautiful and drastic. It is amazing they created such detail and beauty using the source engine truly pushing it to it's limits.
I feel the game is very well paced and as it is open to personal interpretation it is a personal journey for each individual who plays/ expereinces/ observes it.
The fact you cannot run means you take the time to look around and that looking is greatly rewarded in the detail and dialogue. It feels like a real journey, at first a country walk, to the seaside and exploring through vast inspiring and luminous caves only to re-emerge into the night.
Highly reccommended short but a definate unique and rewarding gaming experience. Gaming Art without the presumptuousness. It just feels right.
If you have patience and enjoy observing detail you will enjoy this, if not it's probably not for you.
My score 8.5/10 Worth the price of admission.
