Heiankyo Alien for Game Boy is a great adaptation of the original Heian-kyō Alien created back in the late seventies by the University of Tokyo's own "Theoretical Science Group" and released in Arcades in January of 1980 by Denki Onkyō. It is perhaps the originator of what is now called the "Trap-em-Up" genre, of which consists of games like Space Panic, Lode Runner, Boomer's Adventure in ASMIK World, and several others. Modern examples of games within the Trap-em-Up genre include Tecmo's "Deception" or "Kokumeikan/Kagero/Soumatou" franchise.

Heiankyo Alien is about a Japanese officer of the Heian era who is defending the captial city of Heian-kyō from an alien invasion by trapping aliens in holes and then burying them alive. As you progress, enemies become more plentiful and tougher to trap, as they can escape from holes faster and become more agressive. Hyperware, the developers, featured an old version of the game as well as an updated version with much better audio/visuals (which alternate between levels). The game was also updated by Syscom for Super Famicom as part of Nichibutsu's line-up, titled "Nichibutsu Arcade Classics 2: Heiankyo Alien".

This is a video of it in action. Enjoy.
