Just like Returnal, Helldivers 2 understood the assignment. Take an already successful and unique experience and then graft it onto a premium product. This brings the existing fan base along while also allowing new players to join in the liberation
The visuals overhaul, along with the return of meaty audio and the introduction of dual sense integration has created a strong sense of immersion that always leaves your blood pumping as Arrowhead walks the fine line between fun and overwhelmed.
It’s not uncommon to have no more redeploy markers while waiting for your evacuation ship, being down to your last mag, out of stims and a giant bug is barreling towards you.
Helldivers 2 features the same satirical tone about patriotism combined with the satisfying friendly fire but it’s the transition from isomeric to third person that takes the game to new heights beyond the visual appearance.
The Environment is now essentially a character of its own. The world feels much more dangerous as things like deep snow and mud can slow you down along with the sun blinding you depending on which direction you're facing.
Not only does this leads to a much more strategic approach to missions, but also leads to much more emergent gameplay as the margin of error is much greater than it ever was leading to moments that won’t be forgotten between squad mates
Helldivers 2 is still a squad based game first but playing solo does feel slightly more feasible than in the original. It would have been great to have Ai squad mates for the times you didn’t want to match make or when someone quits.
There are a lot of carrots dangling back at the ship, with lots of different currencies to collect that are all collectible just by completing missions successfully
Helldivers 2 is an easy recommend for people with a regular squad as the experience with buddies compared to solo or matchmaking is like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Helldivers 2 is bigger and better than ever and still feels as unique today as it did in 2015.
