Act 2 is the second longest act in the game. It has the first "upgraded house" to be in the full game. Unlike Act 1, the Mr. Peterson's house is different in color, size, and a huge wall surrounds it. Act 2 is a distorted memory by adult Nicky Roth, remembering his escape from the Peterson residence, which since then, had been burnt down sometime after Act 2 and before Act 3.
After being caught in the basement, Mr. Peterson kidnaps Nicky Roth and locks him in the basement in another room. Nicky wakes up, and then a light from a window falls and Aaron Peterson unlocks the door. Nicky leaves the room and discovers a vent that leads to his escape from the basement. He climbs out of a trapdoor and finds himself back Mr. Peterson's yard. Although, tall walls can be seen bordering the house, this was not real as it was a distorted memory. These tall walls preventing Nicky from escaping easily. After completing puzzles and escaping the house, Mr. Peterson notices that Nicky is running away and starts to pursue him. Before he captures him, Aaron breaks a window in a successful attempt to distract Mr. Peterson. Nicky is able to reach the porch of his house and looks back, seeing Mr. Peterson with an envious face before closing the door. Nicky becomes very fearful of him and does not intrude anymore. After his escape, Nicky told his story to the proper authorities, causing Mr. Peterson and Aaron to flee to the museum in the game’s sequel, Hello Neighbor 2. Mr. Peterson also brought Mya’s body with them, which is why we can see an empty grave in Act 3.
The game is divided into four parts: Act 1, Act 2, Act 3, and Act Finale. The game is played in a first-person perspective, and the player must aim a reticle at certain objects to interact with them or to throw or use a currently held item (for example, throwing a ball at a window or aiming a crowbar at nails to remove them). Up to four items can be kept in an inventory space. Items of the same kind cannot be stacked together in one slot.
