Realism and Dungeons and Dragons don't always go together even when they should. This is a spot where the DM has to step and arbitrate for the best story out come in the game. Sure it may not be the out come you were looking for from the encounter, but this is a tabletop role-playing game and that is how it goes sometimes. Rarely does the game masters plans ever survive 1st contact with the players in a gaming group.
