Long form: The use action proximity is large enough to reach from outside the Forcefield, but it can only be triggered when at a certain position from behind the specific pillar. The window that you'll be able to successfully 'use' the pillar is pretty small. This is suggested for use during a speedrun.
This is actually an older video which I created a couple of years specifically for the Heretic 2 thread at Speed Demos Archive, but since then, the runner doing the game (Drew 'stx-vile' DeVore) has stopped speedrunning the game after the third area.
