Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel is a direct sequel to Hexen, and is simply an addon WAD meant to be run alongside Hexen. It requires the 1.1 version of Hexen to run, but the Hexen 1.1 patch is included with the Deathkings CD so you don't have to do any searching on the Internet for it before you can play.

After the destruction of Korax in Kronos, the three heroes try to use the power of the Chaos Sphere, but it's power proved to be more than the three can handle, and are sent to another world previously conquered by the Serpent Riders. Their adversaries in this addon is the titular Deathkings of the Dark Citadel. It is three hubs long, but these hubs are longer than any hub ever encountered in Hexen.

I play as Parias the Cleric on his highest difficulty setting. Secret levels are found in the process.

The lone Ruby Planet found in the secret area connecting the alcoves in the portal rooms for Sump and Badlands is used on the Constellation chart. It is not required to finish the hub, and if it's placed in it's specific slot at any time, the game explains that it was strange, and sends you back to Ruined Village, but this time, the pillars blocking the way to a portal in the staircase past the first part of the area. The portal takes you to the secret level named "Pyre".

As with some of the other secret levels, the purpose of visiting Pyre is to collect the artifacts and other items scattered around. The starting room's four switches have different effects, and the outer four rooms have their own challenges and own rewards to be collected. After finishing up in Pyre, I revisit Catacomb and Brackenwood to pick up items I left behind (Although I really didn't need the item in Catacomb, since it's an Armor Class item. The Icon of Defender on the other hand, I don't know how to get to it without the Wings of Wrath...). After that, I leave Blight and head straight for the next hub: Constable's Gate...

P.S.: The intermission text makes me laugh. It acts like I didn't have many artifacts in my inventory, and I used some artifacts, but I still have plenty to use, and a full stock of Quartz Flasks, Flechettes, and Discs of Repulsion on top of that. So this means the intermission text made no sense in that part...
