This small video shows how to create the right ppm file for notch.
You may use from 1 up to 16 indexed colors, but you must remember that the palette created is only going to be used to be mapped with the startup palette, so in some (maybe almost all) cases you'll end up with a 16 colors notch but only 4 colors from the startup palette will fit the notch.
