HMS Unicorn - “Totally Not a Combat Carrier.”
HMS Unicorn is a fascinating ship, in both design and service. A unique take on the idea of what a 'support ship' can actually do. She was ostensibly designed to provide support for proper fleet carriers. Maintain their aircraft, provide supplies, and take care of the pilots.
Unicorn did this quite well. But she also saw combat duty of her own. Including being a very successful fighter carrier. And an equally successful stint at *shore bombardment*. The only aircraft carrier to turn her guns on shore targets.
I doubt any of her designers could have predicted that.
