I animated both the player and the station in this scene. The idea behind these stations is that they were originally intended for the robotic keepers of the world. The stations would switch out for whatever utility attachment was necessary to complete a task and the Keeper would set to it. It needed to show that the player was much smaller than the intended operator, and this is what we came up with. Rather than just a hand, the device pulls the player character all the way up to the shoulder, and then some. After the upgrade process, I wanted the reattachment of the arm to the shoulder to feel like a disturbing sensation to the player character.

Behind the scenes, the player's actual glove arm is folded and compressed as much as possible, and scrunched up into the front of the device near his shoulder. Then, a separately rigged copy of the glove arm extends forward and blows apart step, by step. All of that stuff came together fairly easily, but it was the machine animation that really took the most work. Each component has to have its own beat within the rhythm of the animation, that doesn't step on another, or pull focus at the wrong time. It becomes a complex kind of choreography, but one I find pretty fun.
