Hocus Pocus - EARLY BETA - Time Tripping: Level 2 (1994) [MS-DOS]
This is a beta version of Hocus Pocus, a side-scrolling platform game developed by Moonlite Software and published by Apogee Software in 1994. You take the role of Hocus, a young wizard apprentice, and the goal of this game is to collect all the crystal balls within the levels.
This version of the game is from January 1994 – five months before the final version has been released. As you might notice, everything is still a bit different and Hocus was originally not supposed to wear a coat.

Let's compare this Hocus Pocus BETA with the original v1.1:
- Overall the BETA game runs a bit faster.
- Hocus his sprites are way different.
- HUD is less detailed. It's just a bar wilt a green gradient around it instead of the detailed marble-stone textured HUD they used in v1.1.
- No prompt at the start of the level explaining your objective (collecting the crystals).
- Enemies shoot more projectiles.
- Jumping or falling into the boiling mud with instantly kill you.
- You can't look up nor down in this version of the game. In the v1.1 you can hold down the up/down key to do this.
- Some lightning bolt power-ups have been removed (they make you shoot two bolts at the same time instead of only one).
- Some treasures has been added or removed.
- Way more traps where you can get stuck and have to start over.
- Music sounds totally different, but are clearly the same tracks. it's like fine tuned it before v1.1.
- When enemies are spawning you can already get hit by them even when they haven't fully spawned, so watch out for those sparks. On the other hand, you can already damage them aswel.
- Collecting treasures needs to be done more precise. It's like your hitbox is smaller and it's easier to miss picking up diamonds.
- End level BONUS for Time to beat are not doable. Some of them are set to the wrong values like in E1M2 the time to beat is '2' (seconds), and E1M3 to '3' (seconds).
- Prompt at the end of a level if you didn't get a 'perfect' score, asking if you'd like to retry a level has been removed on v1.1.
- E1L1: There's a tile added where you go left to find the gold key so you can't cheap hit those enemies. Tile's removed on v1.1
- E1L1: When dropping straight down at the end near the last crystal you'll drop into the bubbling goo instead of on a safe platform.
- E1L1: Time to beat is 120 instead of 150 (v1.1). The rest of the levels have faulty times to beat.
- E1L1/E1L2: Colors and some of the tiles are different, some of them less detailed then in v1.1.
- E1L2: They've added red flying demon enemies to the treasure room on the bottom right of the level.
- E1L2: The original features a pit that reveals whenever you flip a switch. They've extended it to a deathtrap in the BETA and have Terexin warn you for it.
- E1L3: The first crystal is a trap. Without pulling the right combinations with the switches on the right, collecting the first crystal will lock you up.
- E1L4: The first set of switches are really close to eachother. And it's another deathtrap if you didn't collect the magic potion (rapid fire).
- E1L4: Some platforms disappear after you jumped away from them.
- E1L5: There's a teleport on the right from the start. If you use that at the start you'd be stuck in the silver key area, you have to open up the door first.
- E1L6: If you grab the gold key at the start and continue going right you'll fall in a spike pit and get stuck
- E1L6: The bottom right of the level is a bit different (before the "Watch your toes, big jump!")
- E1L6: The pinguin ambush (below that part where you always struggle to collect all red gems) can be visited once. The second time you'd enter you'd be stuck. In v1.1 they have the left side of this room open up so you can't get stuck here.
- E1L6: Terexin warns you not to go any further on the top left of the level, there's another spike pit.
- E1L7: The part where you find warp-potions next to eachother, don't take the first one. It will teleport you in that box with Terexin who tells you "Don't worry. These walls will crumble to dust in a few thousand years. Heeeheeheee! Baaahaahaa!"
- E1L7: Level 7 seems to be unfinishable at first. After unlocking the silver key the floor should disappear underneath you, but this seems not to trigger. Try to jump to the key from below to have the floor open up so you can continue.
