HOK Uses UE4 and 3D Repo for Centre Block Project | Build: Architecture 2021
Watch HOK explain how they leveraged Unreal Engine and 3D Repo to build an application that will eventually let them view the development trajectory of their huge Centre Block renovation project from start to finish. HOK’s Centre Block renovation is such a complex project, the firm needs to give the stakeholders the ability to monitor and view the work as it proceeds.
The team currently has about 75 terabytes of reality capture data. That accounts for terrestrial laser scanning, hand scanning, orthographic imagery, and photogrammetry.
This data represents the first three years of the project's existence—there are still around seven years left, which means that 75 terabytes will grow to around 350-400 terabytes by the time the last brick is laid.
To manage the data and present it in a digestible way for stakeholders, HOK developed an application using Unreal Engine that enables the team to concatenate all of the aspects of the reality capture data. This streams the data from a variety of sources, including their local data centre, and Cintoo Cloud.
It enables them to ultimately deliver the application via Pixel Streaming on cloud. The primary purpose of the Pixel Streaming app is to give context to the entire trajectory of the project. It enables you, in effect, to trace the entire state of every space in the building throughout its history.
HOK have also been investigating the use of 3D Repo to create a supplemental versioning system that enables them to trace their BIM related data and the Revit model specifically throughout its existence, so they can compare that information when upgrades are performed or major model changes are executed. In addition, they've been leveraging 3D Repo’s new plugin in order to stream that content and those differential checks into UE4.
In this video, HOK gives an insight into the impact this application has had on the delivery of the multi-billion-dollar project.
