1Hollow Knight is an independent metroidvania video game developed and published by Team Cherry, a small Australian studio, for which this is their first commercial release. It was released in 2017 for PC (Windows, Mac, and Linux), and in 2018 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Its long-term development was largely made possible by a significant crowdfunding effort on the Kickstarter platform.
The game's plot follows the quest of an insectoid knight to penetrate the depths of the kingdom of Hallownest and eradicate the evil entity imprisoned there since time immemorial within the eponymous Hollow Knight. The antagonist's malignant influence is once again felt in an infection that eats away at the kingdom and gradually contaminates most of the native insects. At the end of his journey, the knight realizes that he is merely a cog in the mechanism holding the plague prisoner, and that a sacrifice may be necessary to end the infection.
Developed by only three artists and developers and one composer, the game achieved medium-term commercial success and ultimately reached over three million units sold nearly two years later, a rare achievement for an indie game. Despite its high difficulty level, it also received considerable praise, with many critics even elevating it to the pinnacle of metroidvania games. A sequel, titled Hollow Knight: Silksong, focusing on a supporting character introduced in the first game, was released in 2025.
