Homeless Man Codes App That Reduces CO2 Emissions
Leo Grand, who was living on the streets after losing his job from Metlife, was approached by a young software engineer named Patrick McConlogue and offered a choice: $100 or coding lessons. Grand chose coding lessons, and now after 4 months of teaching by McConlogue and writing from Grand, the app is live. Grand calls his app "Trees for Cars," which helps connect people in ride shares and shows how much carbon dioxide the carpool saved from entering the earth's atmosphere.
Trees for Cars (for iOs): https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/trees-for-cars/id767249238
Trees for Cars (for Android): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.treesforcars.treesforcars
Grand gets about $0.70 for each purchase, which goes to help getting him into a home and furthering his education. If anything, this story seems to punctuate what a useful skill coding is, and why it could help people who pick that skill up.
