Honkai: Star Rail #53 - Double trouble
I'm playing Honkai: Star Rail! It's basically Genshin (an open-world role playing game) but set in a more futuristic, sci-fi setting where combat is turn-based.
I'm building a PC setup, and while I have everything, it will still take some time before I can actually do stuff (I know this doesn't make sense, but bare with me). The last thing I received was a monitor. More specifically, I got an Acer SB27U monitor. It's a 27in, 2560x1440 100 Hz (this part may be a lie but final verdict will come out later) monitor that takes advantage of AMD FreeSync (I don't have an AMD graphics card so I won't be using this feature). While it sounds like a nice 2K display, it actually has similar resolution as my MacBook Air (2560x1600), so it's not much of an upgrade.
While I didn't think much of this monitor, I suddenly realized today that I might be able to plug that monitor into my MacBook Air. I tried it, and it worked! I'm able to have dual display, which can be nice if I want to have two things pulled up at once. Then I put the monitor through some test. Here are some quick findings that were interesting to me:
- The monitor does not make stuff look better. Which makes sense since both displays have similar resolutions.
- Genshin Impact on GeForce NOW still only does 1400x900, even on the monitor. Seems like the resolution limitation for Genshin Impact is not due to the MacBook Air's display, since the game's resolution is still poo on the new monitor. The resolution limit to 1400x900 is coming from another source, I think.
- When playing Minecraft (a game that has been optimized for macOS), I can get it to fill the monitor's display on fullscreen, which is something I cannot do with Genshin. If I use QuickTime Player and record the monitor, I can record videos that are 2560x1440, which I think would be perfect to upload to YouTube. Interestingly enough, the MacBook display records at 2880x1800, but the aspect ratio isn't ideal for YouTube videos.
I will do a more thorough review of the monitor later. But for now, I'm slightly disappointed. I would have like to have gotten something with more hertz, better build quality, and a build-in-speaker. I do, however, like its thinness, its flatness, and its lightness. Can't say I'd recommend it if you have a Nvidia graphics card. But if you have a budget AMD graphics card build, I think this monitor would be a great option.
Thanks for watching!
