342One of the highest rated co-op games of all time, Spirit Island, now has a newcomer version: Horizons of Spirit Island! Greater than Games rehauls the popular Spirit Island by merging the island boards into one, giving 5 new spirits, 3 new presence colors, and providing a quick start guide. Horizons gameplay is exactly the same as Spirit Island, where you play a spirit cooperatively to defend the island’s inhabitants from invaders, who ravage and build every turn as they try to blight the island. Play as Eyes Watch from the Trees to defend spaces, or Sunbright Whirlwind to push invaders out of lands! At only $30 through Target, this looks like a good deal! The positives for gameplay of Horizons are the same, but in a lighter box with streamlined spirits. But what are players losing out in the lower price tag, as they open the box and see downgraded components in the form of cardboard punchout tokens, less replayability… which are all things that may be disappointing coming from Gloomhaven Jaws of the Lion, another newcomer version of a popular co-op game. Is Spirit Island Horizons too similar and streamlined in the wrong ways? Watch and find out!
