How ‘Birdman’ Pulled Off That Wild Times Square Scene on a Tiny Budget
In Birdman, one of the film’s most unforgettable moments is when Michael Keaton’s character, Riggan Thomson, gets locked out of a Broadway theater mid-performance and is forced to walk through Times Square in nothing but his tighty-whities. It’s a chaotic, surreal moment—made even more impressive when you learn how they pulled it off.
The film was shot on a relatively low budget, which meant shutting down Times Square for a controlled shoot was completely off the table. That would’ve cost hundreds of thousands—money the production simply didn’t have. So instead, the crew got creative.
To capture the scene, director Alejandro González Iñárritu had his team place actors and extras among the real Times Square crowd. Their job? Create a narrow, natural-looking lane for Keaton and the camera operator to move through, while blending in and adding life with bits of dialogue and action.
But even that wasn’t enough. Iñárritu worried that tourists and bystanders would catch on to the cameras too quickly and ruin the shot. So, he came up with a clever distraction: just a few feet away, the production staged a street performer in a bright, elaborate costume, drawing the attention of the crowd and keeping eyes off the real action.
It was guerrilla filmmaking at its best—blending fiction and reality in one of the busiest places on Earth.
