How Black Mesa artificially extends its duration compared to Half-Life 1
Unnecessary puzzles, rooms filled with 10x more enemies, alternative routes/exploration zones (which are there to rewards exploration with health, ammo, etc.) now forced on the player, I could go on and on...
The original game had unskippable scripted sequences too, but the first 3 chapters of this game could very much be one of those FMV games on the Sega CD, every other room you are halted by a script that either has no place there or have been stretched out to be twice as long as the original.
Remember that scene in Unforeseen Consequences where you are trying to go up the elevator and when you press the button, you see it crash right in front of your eyes so you are forced to take ladders? Here, you have to wait for about 30 seconds of dialogue, metal scratching and cables breaking to finally see that lift fall down.
If you wanna showcase that shit hit the fan in Black Mesa, do something like in Blue Shift, an exaggerated montage of equipment failing, aliens killing/chasing personnel and the place becoming a warzone in minutes. Not this, where you walk from one monologuing NPC to another and constantly breaking the momentum.
