How can you make a motor? | Live Experiments (Ep 20) | Head Squeeze
Fran Scott shows us how you can make the first electrical motor invented, Faraday's homopolar motor. Go on give it a try for yourself!

IMPORTANT: You will need one sober adult with a sense of scientific wonder to be present....
The items you will need to carry out this experiment from home are: a metal coat hanger, scissors, electrical wire, garden wire, an AA battery, electrical tape, a paper clip and an strong magnet.
1. Bend you coat hanger to make a frame as shown in Fran's video.
2. Wrap some electrical wire around the hook a few times (about 60cm length).
3. Chop off one length of garden wire (about 40cm).
4. Strip all the ends of your electrical wire and garden wire with scissors with a pair of scissors or cable strippers (Please get an adult to this).
5. Attach your garden wire to the shorter length of your electrical wire by intertwining their two stripped ends.
6. Hang your magnet to the lower stripped end of your garden wire
7. Now bend your paper clip (Just like it is on the video)
8. Attach your paperclip to the magnet.
9. You can now attach the longer length of electrical wire to your battery and tape it on so it is secure.
10. If you touch your magnet now with the electrical wire that has a free stripped in end your motor should kick into action!
Live Experiments: Our resident science demo thrill-seekers will give the YouTube audience their big science treat each week with an experiment where you can find out how to make food dance, power a light bulb with household objects and create mega smoke rings!
