How Dark Souls' Undead Burg Teaches Through Suffering | Art of the Level
In the first episode of our new series, Art of the Level, we’re taking a look into Dark Souls and how the game design philosophies of From Software are full display in the Undead Burg.
Throughout the video we’re going to look at how Dark Souls 1 uses tropes like difficulty, repetition, subtlety, and accumulation of knowledge to craft the Undead Burg, a level that help set the mold for games like Dark Souls 2, Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne, Sekiro, as well as countless other soulslikes.
Using Dark Souls Remastered gameplay, we’re going to examine how From software took the action RPG and turned it into a whole new subgenre. So be prepared for an examination of the Undead Burg’s level design that even includes moments that were inspired by Caspar David Friedrich’s “Wanderer Above the Fog” painting.
While this video does include Dark Souls Gameplay, this isn’t a Dark Souls walkthrough. Instead it’s an analysis of the level design in the Undead Burg.
We hope you enjoyed our first Art of the Level on Dark Souls. For more analysis and deep dives on Game development and all things video games make sure to keep it tuned to IGN Games.
