The Essence mechanic in Ninja Gaiden exists primarily to facilitate the continuous use of UTs, provide occasional healing opportunities, and reward the player with bonus in-game currency. But, this mechanic is responsible for much more than that, and I believe it actually plays a significant role in creating the distinct combat flow Ninja Gaiden is known for, especially the first game.

In this video, I explore some of the lesser-known ways in which Essence interacts with and challenges the player's combat abilities.
