How Game Demos Became Betas
Game demos used to be a great way to determine if a game was worth buying or not, but now they’ve started to disappear. So, what happened?

The common practice among developers in the early era of the Xbox 360, was to release a game demo, either on or shortly after the release date of a full game. It was a good system. It gave the consumer a chance to test the game before buying and simultaneously acted as a marketing device for the publisher. When I first bought an Xbox 360, or should I say, my parents bought me an Xbox 360, I didn’t own any games for it. I was relying on Blockbuster, and the free to download Game Demos on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Back then, it was a much simpler place, with not much to download. Gamer Pictures, Blade Themes, Marble Blast Ultra (An amazing game about… marbles) and a handful of bonus content for each game. Playing so many Game Demos worked in my favor because it meant that at Christmas, Birthdays and whenever I saved up enough money, I had a good idea about which games I liked and which I didn’t like. Not only that, but it gave me a wide variety of games to play.

Since the entire point of a demo was to entice players into buying the full game, the emphasis was on making sure that the demo gave the player a good experience. It also put more accountability on the developer because the status quo was to release a demo alongside the full game at launch. This meant that developers had to be confident enough in their games, that giving players a snippet of would be enough to drive a sale. Essentially, the onus was on the developer to show the consumer that their game was worth their money. A way for players to test the game before buying it.

Interestingly enough, game demos have started to appear once again. Such as the highly anticipated Resident Evil 2 Remake.
