Grim Fandango was a critical darling when it came out in 1998. Even today, many people consider it as one of the greatest adventure games — if not one of the greatest games PERIOD. With that high praise said, Manuel Calavera may have been the grim reaper to the adventure game industry. Why is that?
In this video we discuss how Lucas Arts, Tim Schafer and Manny Calavera attempted to reinvigorate a dying genre. We discuss the fact that platforms such as Playstation, Xbox and even the PC had changed the landscape of gaming. We discuss how we as consumers were different than in previous years. We discuss the competitive year that Grim Fandango was released and how the theme of the Game may have causes the buyers to come around too late. We discuss how the 3d controls may have alienated it's established fans at first.
In this video we compare the previous titles in the Golden Age of point and Click Adventure gaming sold (Kings Quest 7). We discuss the fact that Star Wars movies were dictating Lucas Arts marketing strategies and how the cost of making more Adventure Games were not a justifiable strategy for George Lucas and Lucas Arts. We discuss how other adventure game developers such as Sierra, TAG, Microprose, etc noticed the poor launch, Lucas Arts cancelling Sam and Max 2 as well as Full Throttle 2 and followed suit in cancelling their upcoming adventure games such as Space Quest and Leisure Suit Larry.
We also discuss the rise of the Adventure game industry with developers Double Fine re-releasing Grim Fandango Remastered and Day of The Tentacle Remastered and how fans and creators have come around to how great the game was as evidenced by all the the Grim Fandango Lets Play Grim Fandango Music appreciation, Grim Fandango Walkthrough, Grim Fandango Review, Grim Fandango trailer, and Grim Fandango scene video's that have been released.
