How I Got a Trending Tesla Hashtag
20So after my successful #FSDBeta Canada campaign, I have recently had another one of my own created Tesla related hashtags go viral. It's been featured on a bunch of news sites, popular YouTube channels, and was trending on Twitter, even hours before Tesla's annual shareholder meeting. Sometimes it's better to spend less time on something for greater results. In this case, my viral #TeslaDatingScore took a grand total of 10 minutes. Important Disclaimer: this was supposed to be a joke. Some have taken it too seriously.
So let's go back in time. Value Analysis tweeted "$TSLA ownership is a requirement to date me". My friend Lisa suggested that this community needs a new dating app. Don't choose by looks or by personality. Choose by how much Tesla is in their life. So I made it happen.
Within 10 minutes I had the Tesla Dating Score created. Early adopters got a bonus for there score. Owning cars is more valuable than owning apparel. Which is slightly more valuable than owning shares. At the very bottom of the list is the number of Tesla tweets. Everything is weighted based on actual Tesla mission support. In the end you get a score that you can share with Twitter. The entire score system tries to keep your number under 100. As with everything in life, you can't keep everyone happy. Some did not like my simple 10 minute algorithm.
But it went viral. How? The real magic behind getting this to become as popular as has been through the Tweet button which auto populated with your score, and the hashtag. That's when @daelmor (follow her if you aren't already) and I would RT all the dating scores for extra exposure to those who shared. She also created a spreadsheet keeping a leaderboard of all the entries. It didn't take long for the new hashtag to become suggested on Twitter. An hour at most. Just typing in Tes and it was suggested. From there, news articles followed.
I collect no data from anyone filling out the form. I can't even tell how many have filled it out, outside of those who choose to share their data to Twitter. There are no ads on the page either. While this was just a fun experiment (I definitely can't invest time into coding this further for health reasons), it just demonstrates how something small and silly can go viral.
