How Nero went from Zero to Hero
So this will be somewhat unorthodox to the other ‘character studies’ I’ve made in the past pertaining to the Sons of Sparda (Dante and Vergil) in the sense that I won't delve deep into what makes Nero tick or explore much of his unique background that grants him his distinct identity (similar to what I did for my Dante and Vergil character studies). Instead, I decided to explore his perception by the public eye throughout the years, which I found more appropriate given his somewhat contentious nature, further alleviated by Devil May Cry’s latest entry. Otherwise, there are some interesting tidbits I glossed over for the sake of brevity:
For starters, I think Nero’s inclusion compliments both Dante and Vergil’s arc and, in a way, finalizes them for better or for worse. Dante takes on the responsibility of fostering and looking after his nephew, becoming, in some measure, a father figure (an interesting coda given his instinctual knack for dad jokes)
I also laugh at the stark contrast between Vergil's clear appearance and his devil-may-care attitude when it comes to nourishing the foundation of his offspring, furthering his egocentricity. All the while, Dante’s appearance is unkempt despite being more responsible than his twin brother.
In Devil May Cry 5, we also witness a bit of humility from Vergil being bested by his son, which is refreshing, to say the least.
Another simple detail I really savor from Devil May Cry 4 is when Kyrie exclaims that Nero is the most human person she ever met, despite witnessing his demon arm and powers—which put a stranglehold on her brother—this echoes back to the titular sentiment that even a devil may weep human characteristics to humans, perhaps to an even greater extent.
Well, that’s all I have for you all. I hope you enjoy this video and “Devil ‘May’ Cry Month,” as it were. If all goes to plan with punctuality, I’ll be releasing two more Devil May Cry-related pieces. Until then, stay safe, friends.
