11Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, has died at the age of 96, after reigning for 70 years.
Elizabeth is the UK’s longest ruling monarch and she was thrust into the role at the tender age of 25.
Queen Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born on April 21st 1926 in Mayfair London, the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York.
She was married to Philip Mountbatten, former prince of Greece and Denmark and had four children with him, Charles the 3rd, princess Royal Anne, Prince Andrew duke of york and Prince Edwards Earl of Essex.
In 1965 she was the first British sovereign to travel to Germany in 52 years. She was a Queen of peace. She saw public and voluntary service as one of the most important elements of her work, from visits to charities and schools, to hosting visiting heads of state, to leading the nation in remembrance and celebratory events.
The queen had links with over 600 charities, military associations and public service organizations, covering opportunities for young people to the preservation of wildlife and the environment.
The Queen has witnessed plenty of memorable historical moments and worldwide events. She was there when Winston Churchill was still prime minister, when Martin Luther King Jr was killed, when Apollo 11 landed on the moon. The end of the Vietnam war, Margaret Thatcher becoming UK prime minister, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, the Fall of the Berlin wall, the 9/11 attacks, the great recession, the start of the Arab spring, the launch of Bitcoin, Brexit, and Covid-19… which is why her death truly marks the end of an era.
