How to Add USB Drive for External Storage on Amazon Fire TV (Fast Tutorial)
3For Fire TV Cube and Fire TV Models with Native USB Ports
Devices like the Fire TV Cube (all generations) have a built-in USB port, making it straightforward to add external storage.
Choose a Compatible USB Drive:
Use a USB 3.0 flash drive (up to 128 GB) for best performance, as recommended by Amazon. USB 2.0 drives work but may be slower. External hard drives are not officially supported and may require external power.
The drive must be formatted in FAT32 (all Fire TV Cubes) or NTFS (Fire TV Cube 3rd Gen only).
Connect the USB Drive:
Plug the USB flash drive into the USB port on the back of the Fire TV Cube.
Format the USB Drive:
The Fire TV should automatically detect the drive and prompt you to format it. If prompted, choose Format to External Storage (for media like videos/photos) or Format to Internal Storage (for apps). Warning: Formatting erases all data on the drive, so back up important files first.
If no prompt appears:
Go to Settings, My Fire TV, USB Drive.
Select Format to External Storage or Format to Internal Storage.
Formatting takes 2–5 minutes, depending on the drive size. Do not unplug the drive during this process.
Use the USB Drive:
For Media (External Storage):
Copy media files (e.g., MP4, MP3) from a computer to the USB drive using a file manager like VLC or NOVA Video Player, available on the Amazon App Store. FAT32 limits individual file sizes to 4 GB.
Access media via a compatible app (e.g., VLC, NOVA Video Player, or Kodi). Navigate to the drive’s directory (typically /storage/extUsb/).
For Apps (Internal Storage):
Go to Settings, Applications, Manage Installed Applications.
Select an app and choose Move to USB Storage. Note: Not all apps support moving to external storage due to developer restrictions (e.g., Netflix, Amazon bloatware).
To safely remove the drive, go to Settings, My Fire TV, USB Drive, Eject USB Drive to avoid data corruption.
