How to beat MagiMaster in the Fanatics Tower (Final Fantasy VI, SNES Classic)
MagiMaster is probably the most notorious boss in all of Final Fantasy VI because of his tendency to cast Ultima upon defeat, which will usually wipe out your entire party. This is particularly discouraging, because the Tower of Fantatics (aka the Cultists Tower) is already difficult enough since you cannot FIGHT or use special commands in this dungeon.
MagiMaster is the boss battle at the top of the Tower of Fanatics (which has other names, depending on the version of the game or which translation you're using). When you defeat him, he casts the Ultima spell on your party. There are essentially four ways to win this boss battle.
Firstly, you could somehow survive the Ultima spell simply by tanking it to the face. This would require at least one of your party members to have a maximum HP about 7000. That requires some level grinding, but it's certainly a possibility.
The easiest solution is to cast the LIFE 3 spell on one of your party members. This spell will revive that party member IMMEDIATELY AFTER they are KO'd. With the Life 3 spell active, that party member will die to Ultima, then revive, therefore surviving the battle.
A reliable but tedious solution is to drain all of the MagiMaster's MP using RASP and OSMOSE until he no longer has the MP required to cast Ultima on death. This takes a long time considering MagiMaster starts with 50,000 MP.
My favorite solution - which is difficult to pull off - is to whittle MagiMaster down to approximately 200 HP left, then cast the Palidor summon. This summon is a crazy bird thing that will scoop up your party and have them all use the JUMP attack one by one.
If any of the first three party members defeat MagiMaster with the Jump attack, he will cast Ultima while you have at least one party member "in the air." That party member will be off screen, and will therefore survive the final Ultima attack and you will tin the battle.
Note that MagiMaster has a rather high physical defense, so each Jump attack from the Palidoor summon will do approximately 80 to 150 damage. At least that's what I've experienced...
