This walkthrough shows how to beat the original Metroid for the NES in less than 1 hour & get the best ending. This isn't the fastest way to beat this game, but it's easier this way & there is still a fare amount of spare time should you need it. In this walkthrough I get all upgrades (except for the Wave Beam), 6 of 8 Energy Tanks, & 175 of 255 missiles.

After defeating both Kraid & Ridley I have Samus kill herself as it's faster than going back to the start of each area on foot. This DOES NOT prevent you from getting the best ending.

Your exact mileage through the game will vary as there is some randomness with where some enemies spawn & how they behave. As such regular enemies in your game may not be exactly as they are in this video.

Brinstar #1 (0:05):
It's best to always make sure you're carrying as many missiles as you can hold. This is especially true in the beginning as you are only able to hold a small amount of missiles. As you go through the game, kill enemies to farm for missiles whenever you can hold more.

Kraid's Lair/Mini-Boss Hideout I (11:38):
At about the 14:30 mark I realized I only had 4 missiles and so I killed the things that crawl on the walls in the hopes of getting a missile. If I had noticed earlier I would have instead farmed the flying enemy in the room that I had just exited. If you find yourself with less than 5 missiles after getting the Energy Tank then I recommend farming the flying enemy until you get the needed missiles.

Just before Kraid is a flying enemy that I farm for missiles. The amount of time it takes to farm this guy for health & missiles depends largely on luck.

Kraid Boss Fight (17:20):
The method I use to beat Kraid is not 100% reliable, but it's the easiest & most reliable way I've found to beat him. At the start of the fight roll into a ball & touch the block at the right. When Kraid shoots his lower spike at you roll into it then get out of the ball and quickly freeze his middle spike. In this video I freeze it about 3/4 of the way across the main platform. Try not to freeze it before that point.

After freezing Kraid's middle spike quickly jump over it and press yourself against the back end of this spike. This pins you in between Kraid & the spike which is exactly what you want (the idea is to prevent Samus from bouncing around as she takes damage). With the middle spike frozen behind you this leaves Kraid's midsection susceptible to damage.

As soon as you press yourself against the back of this spike start spamming the missile button. It actually takes 24 missiles to kill Kraid, but because we only have 20 we have to finish him off with our regular attack. Try to kill him before his spike unfreezes & returns to his body. If this happens then just repeat the strategy by freezing the middle spike away from Kraid & using it to brace yourself against.

Brinstar #2 (18:13):
At about 19:00 I roll through the narrow passageway and then turn around. You need to do this in order to spawn the enemy in the right place so that when he falls you can freeze him & reach the Energy Tank.

Norfair (21:09):
In my experience the Dragons almost never spit fire, but it's possible they will during your playthrough. For the most part taking damage from these guys isn't too much of a problem as you should have near 400 health heading into Norfair & we'll grab another Energy Tank shortly into the next area. As far as dying against the dragons, try not to do so until after getting the Screw Attack.

Ridley's Lair/Mini-Boss Hideout II (26:32):
In the room with the 1st Energy Tank there are a couple false blocks that you can fall through so beware of them when jumping for the Energy Tank. The false blocks are blocks #9 & #10 if counting from the right (starting with the block under the doorway). If you should accidentally fall before getting this Energy Tank then just skip getting it & continue with the rest of the game. You'll have a little less health, but it's not a game ender. In the end you probably won't even need this extra bit of health.

Ridley Boss Fight (28:42):
Kill Ridley with your regular attack instead of with missiles. At 29:30 I freeze the fireballs on both sides of me. This is a little dangerous as it's very easy to get pinned between them & be unable to move until they unfreeze.

Brinstar #3 (31:28):
If you're desperate for time you can try skipping the stuff I do here & go straight to Tourian. You'll have 1 less tank of health, 5 less missiles, & you'll take double damage without the Varia Suit, but you can still finish the game like this.

Tourian (38:18):
Mother Brain Boss Fight (39:55)
Once you reach Mother Brain & break her container the easiest way to kill her is to freeze the Cheerios & then spam missiles at her. With the Rinka (Cheerios) frozen they won't bother you for a little while which gives you a good opportunity to do some serious damage against the brain. When they unfreeze, freeze them again. Repeat until she's defeated.
