Here's how I built my budget storage shelves.
4' Length x 2' Depth x 6' High shelving units.
1 _ 1/2" x 4' x 8' OSB
10 _ 1" x 2" x 8' Furring STrips
153 _ 1" 18ga Brad Nails
48 _ 1 1/2" 18ga Brad Nails
16 _ 2" Drywall Screws
16 _ 1 1/4" Drywall Screws

I needed some mechanical-room shelving, and the cheapest comparable shelving I found was $60 on sale. I decided to design my own shelving. This is the cheapest / method I could think of while still holding much weight. The shelf I tested held 246 lbs.
