With each iOS upgrade for iPhone and iPad devices, Apple adds and removes functionality, fixes bugs, and more. So if someone else who has an iPhone or iPad is able to do something that you're not, one possible reason is that you just may not have upgraded to that version of iOS. Another important thing to remember is that if an older iPhone or iPad model can upgrade to a newer version of iOS, it still may not support some of the new functionality. For example, you can upgrade an iPhone 7 to iOS 12, but you won't be able to create Memojis like newer iPhone models.

In this video, I'll show you how to check the iOS version running on your iPhone or iPad both on your device, and in iTunes on a computer.

First, let's walk through how to check the iOS version running on your Apple iPhone or iPad directly on your device.

Step 1. Tap to launch the "Settings" app on your iPhone or iPad home screen. The Settings screen opens.

Step 2. Scroll down and then tap "General" in the list of options on the Settings screen. The General screen appears.

Step 3. Tap "About" at the top of the General screen. The About screen appears. The iOS version you're running on your iPhone or iPad is listed to the right of Version. In this example, you can see that I'm running iOS 12.1.3.

Now let's walk through how to find what iOS version you have on your iPhone or iPad using iTunes.

Step 1. Connect your iPhone or iPad to your computer using the Lightning USB cable, and then launch iTunes on your computer. You'll arrive on your iTunes home screen.

Step 2. Click the "iPhone" or "iPad" icon in the upper left corner of the screen to the right of the media drop-down. The iPhone or iPad icon looks like a silhouette of those devices. An information screen associated with your connected iPhone or iPad appears. You can see what version of iOS you have by looking on the right side of the first information box on this screen. For example, you can see that I'm running iOS 12.1.3. Additionally, you can easily check for an update to your device in iTunes by clicking "Check for Update" in the same information box.
