HOW TO DIE to Become a BETTER Speaker - YouTuber/Content Creator, Public Speaker, Conversationalist!
DISCORD.ME/ALLSTIN
Missed a couple of points I put in the beginning of the notes, But here it is!
DIE
D - Dynamics
I - Inflection
E - Engagement/Enunciation/Enthusiasm/Energy
MOST IMPORTANTLY - Never. Stop. Learning. Get with people that can help you. Studio or voice work. Anything. It's wild how much someone with years of experience can critique and help you with a read. We are our own worst critic!
Don't start a story by saying "Ok, I don't know why you wanna hear this..." ENGAGE! Try "Hey, check this out..." or "I can't believe this..."
Dynamics
This is the tempo and pitch of your voice.
You don't want to be too monotone, or too outlandish. Find your zone.
This can vary - some situations in person won't be like in videos.
(Example - Starting softly/quietly, building up tension, BUILDING UP to the peak, then... Silence... Bring it back down again.)
Adjust YOUR dynamics to whomever you're speaking with - especially valuable in customer service. If they're soft spoken, match their tone. If they're loud/outspoken, match that.
Match the topic you're speaking about - something exciting will sound different than something solemn and serious.
Sometimes when you're nervous, your voice will be higher pitched and faster - speak with confidence! We are our own worst critics, so it's likely not as bad as you'd think!
---
Inflection
"A change in the form of a word (typically the ending) to express a grammatical function or attribute such as tense, mood, person, number, case, and gender."
Don't always end on the up, as it sounds like you're asking a question and are unsure.
Don't always end on the down either, change it up!
Up, middle, down. Use all 3 to your advantage. Do it naturally, don't force it.
(Example: Beneficial to use when reading lists, so its not always Down. Down. Down. or a three part phrase - up, middle, then down.)
---
Engagement (Engagement/Enunciation/Enthusiasm/Energy)
CAPTIVATE your audience. Toastmasters and Charisma on Command are good resources for this. It's not just what you say, its how you say it, and the body language/props
that accompany it.
Enunciation
Don't slur your words or speak too quickly.
Pronounce the entire word - My example, "Strenth" instead of "Strength" - leaving out the "g". "Insurance" vs. "InSURance"
Someone who speaks another language may need slower speech to absorb it better - I know I would!
Radio and podcast - only has one chance to catch your message (unless they rewind) - no words on a screen to see. Make it clear!
Enthusiasm
Would you watch or listen to yourself? Not narcissism, but overall.
That thing about being able to hear your smile - it seriously is true!
CONFIDENCE - You ARE a YouTuber. A content creator. A speaker. OWN IT! (Not in a conceited way, of course!)
