The fur structure of Van cats, which has been the subject of many scientific studies with its unique characteristics, shows whether the kittens are pure breeds. While efforts to protect the extinction of Van cats, which are known for their sensuality, friendliness, white silky fur, lion's walk, fluffy tail, different eye colors and fondness for water, experts explained how they differ from other cats. Among them, the seal on the head of Van cats stands out.
30 of the cats kept under protection at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University (YYU) Van Cat Research and Application Center and carefully cared for in the "Cat Villa" gave birth this year.
It was determined that the newly born cats with 10-17 black hairs on their heads, called the "Van seal", were the original Van cats.
In a study of 300 Van cats, it was previously proven that cats with black hairs on their heads called "Van seals" at birth are not deaf.

YYU Van Cat Research Center Director Prof. Dr. Abdullah Kaya told Anadolu Agency (AA) that efforts to increase the population of Van cats continue.
Emphasizing that the increase in the number of cats every year is pleasing, Kaya said, "This year, the first kittens of 2022 were born. We are very pleased with the increase in the birth rate so far. It is already clear that we will have more kittens compared to previous years. This makes us very happy."
Stating that the Van cat is distinguished from other cats with its unique features, Kaya said:
"30 mothers have given birth right now. Our center is full of kittens. Every improvement we make regarding Van cats takes us one step further. Every year, the quality of kittens and mothers here increases. We want to see the 'seal' of the Van cat between 10-17 hairs. we're starting to see more of the black feather.
This means that we are on the right track. Because deafness does not occur in those with black hairs on their heads. This shows that we have obtained an original Van cat. We are very happy when we see a black spot on his head. We know without any testing that this is the original Van cat.
As a result of research, we learned that there is absolutely no deafness in animals with seals. A cat with this feature is the original Van cat. In other words, there are about 50 white cat breeds, we have not seen this feature, which we call spot, in any other animal. This feature is only found in the Van cat."
Stressing that the center, which was closed to visitors during the epidemic, there was a density of visitors with the normalization, Kaya said, "Restrictions have been completely lifted in our center. The density is increasing gradually. In other words, those who want to see newly born babies come to our center. We have become a place where every tourist who comes to Van wants to visit."
Mehmet Fatih Bakırcı, who came from Kahramanmaraş and visited the cats, said, "I love cats very much. I am very excited and happy to see them. This is a very beautiful and special place. The kittens are very cute. Their eyes are different colors. We loved them."
