How To Empty Trash on macOS Catalina and Big Sur [Tutorial]
Emptying the trash is usually sufficient to get rid of the files you don't want anymore. But emptying the trash doesn't really destroy the files: They remain on the hard drive, marked for being overwritten the next time your Mac needs the space. As a result, some deleted files can be recovered using disk recovery software.
Deleting files and emptying the trash on a Mac can be easy, unless you run into one of these problems: Emptying trash when item is in use, deleting a locked file, deleting files from a hard drive. We look at these scenarios, as well as deleting a file immediately (bypassing the trash) and deleting the Trash via Terminal.
This tutorial will apply for MacBook Pro, Air, Mini's running the macOS operating system. This tutorial was performed on a macOS Big Sur system.
