How To Enable or Disable SMB1 Protocol In Windows 11 [Tutorial]

SMB, stands for Server Message Block, is a client-server protocol. This helps to share files on network from a server or from another device. If you are having problems when connecting to a SMB server, then the first thing you should check is whether SMB is enabled on your PC. By default, SMB is disabled on Windows 11 PC and here is how you can enable SMB1.

SMB or Server Message Block is a network file sharing protocol meant for sharing files, printers, etc, between computers. There are three versions – Server Message Block (SMB) version 1 (SMBv1), SMB version 2 (SMBv2), and SMB version 3 (SMBv3). Microsoft recommends that you disable SMB1 for security reasons .

Microsoft has announced that it's no longer shipping the SMB1 (Server Message Block version 1) protocol by default with Windows 11 Home starting with the next major release for Windows 11. This is the next major step in getting rid of the long-deprecated protocol, which some users have still been holding onto. Additionally, in the future, the SMB1 binaries will be removed altogether.

This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems (Home, Professional, Enterprise, Education) from all supported hardware manufactures, like Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Alienware, Razer, MSI, Huawei , Microsoft Surface, and Samsung.
