GPU prices continue to go up - even the MSRP prices. In the current graphics card market, how do you afford a new graphics card if you've decided to build now?
Today we go through how to get the best price to performance in your next PC Build. We show you how to cut features you don't really need - like super fast storage and extra PCIE 4.0 - and focus on just the features you need. We look at how to save money on the motherboard, storage, memory, CPU, power supply, case, and CPU cooler. While not all of these may be applicable to your next build, the concept of price to performance is key to getting the most value for any PC Builder.
The motherboard is probably the place most PC builders waste the most money - often getting a board with weaker features that they actually want in favor of features they will never use. X570 boards are a main culprit as well as the idea of "future proofing". Meanwhile most users want great features like WIFI, good VRMs, good onboard audio (especially gamers who use headsets), and good memory compatibility. These features can be found for far less on a B550 or even B450 motherboard (similarly on intel boards, most users don't need a Z590 and a B560 or B460 would be fine!).
The storage is another area users far overspend. Most games do not even use up the full SATA III SSD bandwidth, let alone PCIE 3.0 M.2 speeds. So why do some gamers buy super expensive M.2 and even PCIE 4.0 M.2? It's just a waste of money that could be spent on a better GPU or CPU, components that will get you performance.
Similarly many PC Builders will oversize their power supply. Right now crypto miners are buying up high capacity PSUs in order to power large mining rigs and prices on the high capacity PSUs are sky high! Right sizing the PSU will save you a lot of money! Similarly on the case, memory, and CPU cooler buying the right size or speed components will save you a lot in the end.
For our build we end up taking a $2500 PC Build down to $1850 with almost no loss in performance! That will help you buy the GPU you want and not get stuck with a crappy graphics card but an oversized build. In the end, while the GPU shortage is taking its toll on the GPU market, there are things we can do in order to save money and get great performance.
