Recently Sony stopped letting you add the PS Vita games that are free on PS+ to your account if you are using a PS3. You were never able to add the PS4 games that were free on PlayStation Plus to your account through a PS3.

This shows you how to get all the games free on PS+ for every system added to your account. Use a browser. There's stuff in Free Games, but also in Exclusives and Other Freebies, and on the main PlayStation Plus page. Things definitely are confusing for no reason, but as you can see in the video you gotta look around to find all the free games every month. But make sure you use a browser! :D
