How to grow a YouTube gaming channel with YouTube Shorts and more
This is a video on how I grew a new gameplay channel to 1,447 subscribers in a year.
This is a channel that's essentially just all about fun gameplay clips. It's 90% just funny clips and semi-decent plays. My goal is to get it monetised and I know there would be better ways to do that.
Obviously the usual key to growth is:
1 - Creating content that people are searching for
2 - Creating exciting thumbnails
3 - Making the videos exciting enough that people will watch as much as possible
So if you're looking to grow a channel then the best thing to do is to research what people are looking for. I did a video before on how to do this - https://youtu.be/UizVhGWZoIk
Create videos on things that are relevant to your game:
- Best characters to use
- Best weapons to use
- Easter eggs to discover
- How to do this thing in this game
- This exploit is ruining the game
- etc
Growing without this content is naturally hard, but as I'll show it's not impossible

This is a video on how to grow a YouTube channel that's specifically about gameplay and funny moments. Just clips and content and how to get that to grow and eventually get monetised.
My gameplay channel has had some some reasonable growth since I first started it 365 days ago.

The key is shorts content. Quick, short content that's easy to watch on mobile. In this video I'm showing how to create it.
I created a video on shorts before:
Why YouTube shorts suck but you should do them anyway https://youtu.be/ZhdBGyZXHwc
I've found that shorts are basically churn and burn. You need to make loads of them and throw them out. They'll get watched but will usually plateau and won't last long term. They will, however, generate subscribers.
The reason this sucks is they don't contribute towards monetisation for your channel because you need not only 1,000 subscribers, but also 4,000 watch hours. And the tips say that shorts don't count towards that:
"What counts as 'public watch hours'?
Only valid watch hours from currently public videos count towards YPP eligibility.
Videos played from the 'Stories and short videos' shelf or as part of ad campaigns are not included for YPP eligibility."
See here - https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/72851?hl=en-GB#WHexplain&zippy=%2Cwhat-does-valid-public-watch-hours-mean
Which is quite frankly nonsense. Alas, they're a great way to grow the channel which is frustrating as they won't make money.
