This is a super quick video showing where to find the settings that allow you to hide an Xbox controller in Steam.

This may be needed once in a while for various troubleshooting reasons. This case for my intentions, would be if you have modded Mass Effect to use a controller and are certain you installed that mod correctly and the game still does not let you press start. This method seems to resolve the issue for a few folks so I am sharing.
