This tutorial will explain how to light a OSRS (Old School Runescape) scene in blender. Lighting is important to making your Runescape thumbnails or animations really stand out and look top tier.
In the last tutorial, we explained how to get assets together to build this smithing scene, based off the iconic Runescape location Falador.

Step 1) Full control
Our first goal, is to be able to see our lights in blender. To do this we need to change to render view. This button can be found at the top right hand corner of the screen.
Now we can see lights in blender, we want to be able to control the ‘ambient light’. By default, it is set to grey, which is ugly. And can cause renders to look like this if there are no lights.
To change this setting, we go to the shading tab in the top of the screen. Then we navigate to the bottom and select world. This means we our now editing how the scene is shaded. As you can see it is grey, and we are going to switch it to black. You can change it to any colour you want, however, I am choosing black so I have full control over the lighting.

Step 2) Adding lights
Heading back to the default view. We can just move the default light around, but we want to be able to do this from scratch. So, we are going to delete the original light and are going to add a new light. This can sometimes be hard to see in render mode, with a black background. So you may wish to switch back temporarily. To add a light press shift + A and selecting light. There are a couple of different options. For example, if you wanted a big directional light you can pick sun. But, in this case we are picking a point. This means it is a light that shines in a vigorous circular motion. This light is going to be the light for our furnace.

Step 3) Positioning and colour
We can now move the light around like any other object. However, we have a problem. The light is white and furnaces aren’t white. So, we need to change it to orange. To do this navigate over to the tab on the right and smash the light symbol, like that subscribe button. Now we are in this interface we can change the colour and the power. To change the colour press the white box and change it to orange. The power adjusts how strong the light is. We are going to set the value to 1000.
Now we have a new problem. The light is only in the furnace. So we are going to duplicate it with shift D and then move it just in front of the furnace. You may wish to add another light depending on your scenario.

Now as a bonus tip if you have a character in the scene, you may wish to add a white light right in front of them to make the character be lit up more.
