He was one of the participants in the fictional Squid Game competition after he was left in debt after investing in cryptocurrency which failed. He used drugs during the game, behaved unreasonably and attacked other players. He is played by Choi Seung-hyun (better known as TOP), a rapper who is part of the K-pop band BigBang and was convicted of marijuana use in 2017, which led to widespread anti-fandom among South Koreans. Although the character was not created for him, director Hwang Dong-hyuk aimed to find someone who had quit his job because of drugs for the role. The character is named after the character Thanos from Marvel Comics.
