Ableton Live drum kit sounds are mapped to a key range starting on C1. So how can you play sounds in that octave range if your keyboard can't go lower than C2? The solution: add a Pitch -12 MIDI effect. But why should this even have been necessary? Why weren't drum kits originally developed to start on C2, so that everyone could play them right away?
By the way, I did ask Ableton Live tech support about this over a week ago, and they haven't replied yet. If anyone has more insight about the "C1" choice, or a better solution than using the Pitch -12 MIDI effect, please let me know.
UPDATE: Ableton got back to me (after 3 weeks) and said that the drum kits are programmed according to the standard MIDI implementation.
