How to Play:
Exploring the many rooms of these ancient temples, retrieving treasures, and fending off the evil that resides in them, it's all great stuff for a 1984 release. Down below, I'll explain the mechanics and give some tips to anyone who wants to play this game.
In Mysterious Stones, there are three locations you fly to: the Andes Mountains, Easter Island, and Egypt. Each temple has three entrances which bring you to three different starting rooms. Inside most rooms is a set of egg-shaped stones that can be kicked and destroyed to reveal what's inside. It'll typically be a small treasure that'll award points, but some stones will flash upon being kicked once, meaning they contain one of the following:
- The key ghost, which must be shot with your gun in order to open the doors to the next rooms.
- An angel, who will temporarily freeze all enemies in place and render them harmless.
- A reaper, who cannot be shot with the gun and can only be temporarily dealt with by kicking a stone into it.
- A god, who can temporarily stun enemies and will fight with the reaper if it's on screen.
- A magic wand, which will break open every stone in the room and reveal flashing stones.
- A bubble with Dr. John's face on it, which will award an extra life upon collection.
Inside most rooms will also be three monsters; two smaller ones, which will repair cracked stones and cover uncollected treasures up with stones, and a larger one, which will occasionally turn into a flaming demon that shoots fire as a projectile, and is immune to gunfire while it's in this state. All three of these monsters can be shot with the gun or get thrown off the screen by having stones kicked into them. However, they can only be dealt with temporarily. They will always respawn shortly after being shot or kicked. Some rooms also contain an idol in the center, which will periodically release trails of fire that'll spread across the room. These are deadly to the touch, but enemies cannot pass through them, so this can act as a good opportunity to put space between yourself and the enemies, as well as kick any stones in the vicinity.
If too much time is spent in a room, or if the key ghost disappears without being shot, the floor will collapse, and you must escape quickly in order to avoid losing a life.
It's worth noting that Dr. John's bird will sometimes fly off his shoulder and charge into enemies to stun them, and that it's also possible to get hit by a stone that you kicked, which will send you flying across the room.
You'll know you're closing in on the treasure room when you encounter a room where only skulls spawn instead of the usual enemy trio. These skulls can be either shot or kicked, the latter of which will award 100 points for each skull. This room also contains a bunch of chests instead of stones, one of which will contain the key ghost. From here, you'll enter the treasure room, where you can pick up either the water treasure, the stone treasure, or the fire treasure. Afterwards, you must escape the temple and run outside back to the plane. Each stage starts at 8 AM, and must be completed within 24 in-game hours. If this limit is exceeded, the game is immediately over, regardless of how many lives you have.
After a treasure's been retrieved and the area's been escaped from, Dr. John will fly to either New York or Hong Kong to have his treasure appraised. The point bonus you can get from this is chosen at random between 0 points, 150,000 points, and 10,000,000 points.
Despite all of this, scoring in the game mainly comes down to collecting the treasures in the correct order. The first 16 loops each have a unique combination that must be followed in order to get the large bonus of 100,000,000 points. After that, the combination order repeats. I watched a replay of this game that scores over 2 billion points and wrote down the correct combination for each loop, and followed that as I played this credit, but if you don't have that, another way to tell which treasure you need to collect for that stage is to kick at the outer walls of the treasure room until you locate the spot which tells you which one to get.
Mysterious Stones loops infinitely. The loops do not increase in difficulty, but surviving can become difficult at times. The only way to get extra lives is to get the 1up item in the ??? room of the Easter Island temple.
