A few weeks ago I was introduced to the multiplatinum producer, songwriter and engineer Warren Huart through a mutual friend.

In a nutshell, he’s an L.A heavy weight who works with the likes of Aerosmith, The Fray, Daniel Powter, James Blunt and a host of other great artists.

We hit it off, and pretty much immediately started talking about doing a short video series for you guys to show you what happens in a real life remote recording session.

What’s a “remote recording session”!?

Well, technology has moved on so much during the last few years, that now musicians can achieve top quality recordings without actually being in a recording studio. All you really need is a DAW, a digital interface, and some way transferring your bass signal - such as a mic, D.I or sometimes both.

This is why there’s now a plethora or professional big named musicians now offering their session services to anyone who wants to hire them — simply because they don’t have to leave their house anymore. You can simply send them the files via a service such as wetransfer or hightail, they will record their bass parts, and then send them back over to you.

I’ve personally used services like this for drum parts. I email the files across, and in many cases the same day I’ll receive the drum parts back so I can get them mixed and ready to go.

This kind of session is becoming more and more common place, which is why I thought it would be great to show you how this actually works in ‘real life’ - so when you get your first remote recording session, you’ll know exactly what to expect.

Before we jump straight into “the session”, there are other steps you must take in order to be fully prepared for your session. If you don’t take these steps, it can make an enjoyable experience into quite a stressful situation for both you and the producer or songwriter you’re working with.

In this lesson I’m going to talk you through what preparations you should be making before your remote session.

As always, see you in the shed…

Scott :)
