Amiens is a city in northern France. It is the capital of the Somme department in Hauts-de-France. The city had a population of 136,105 in 2017. It is the main city of the metropolitan area of Amiens, which had a population of 404,766 in 2017. The city is located 100 kilometres (62 mi) from Paris. It is the northernmost city in France with a population over 100,000.

The name "Amiens" comes from the Latin name "Ambientum" or "Ambiani", meaning "surrounding area". It has been known as "Shambles" since at least the time of William the Conqueror, because of the city's layout: its narrow streets and its houses built close together, which made it easy for enemy soldiers to fire into the city with crossbow arrows.
