Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun. It has the third-largest planetary radius and fourth-largest planetary mass in the Solar System. Uranus is similar in composition to Neptune, and both have different bulk chemical composition from that of the larger gas giants Jupiter and Saturn. For this reason, astronomers sometimes place them in a separate category called "ice giants". Uranus's atmosphere is similar to Jupiter's and Saturn's in that it is composed primarily of hydrogen and helium, with a small amount of methane, but it contains more ices such as water, ammonia, and methane, along with traces of other hydrocarbons.

Uranus is the coldest planetary atmosphere in the Solar System, with a minimum temperature of 49 K, and has a complex, layered cloud structure with methane clouds that are the lowest in the atmosphere and are thought to be similar to those found on Titan, Saturn's largest moon. The interior of Uranus is mainly composed of ices and rock.

The name "Uranus" was adopted in 1850 by Johann Bode after its discovery by William Herschel in 1781. The planet was originally named "George" after King George III of the United Kingdom. Uranus is the Latinized form of Οὐρανός (Ouranos), the Greek god of the sky. It is the second-lightest of the gas giants, but still more than 14 times the mass of Earth.
