As the first half November of 2020 kicked in, Sony sneaked in this PS4 dashboard function about PS5 remote play.

This is obviously an added perk in preparation for the ps5 launch.

For this to work, the ps4 and the ps5 must be using the network to communicate with each other. this can be done by using the same wifi network or using a LAN cable.

I am using the LAN method with my ps4 and Ps5 are both connected to my router. my router in this case is serving as the middle man between the two.

Before we start, let's check if we can control the ps5 using the ps4 controller

As you can see, the ps4 controller is lighting up but the ps5 remains unresponsive.

Pushing the buttons does nothing.

This just means that the ps4 controller is not readily supported by the ps5 be default... well as far as the lauch models are concerned.

I shall activate the ps5 controller this time ... the ps5 says that there is wireless controller update is available.

I'm not entirely sure what this update is for but i think it has something to do with the Remote Play that we are planning to do.

This update may or may not show up in your Ps5 units.

Lets just do the update, plug the ps5 controller back and let it reset.

I am trying the ps4 controller again and pushing random buttons still does nothing for the ps5

Let's go to the ps4... turn on the ps4, go to the dashboard then choose ps5 remote play so that the ps4 can find the ps5 nearby

Now back to the ps5... on the ps5 settings - go to system - go to remote play - switch on the Enable Remote Play option

Then pick Link device - the ps5 will give you an Eight digit code... memorize it or write it down leave the ps5 alone for now

Back to the ps4 , choose OK so that the ps4 can find the ps5 nearby using your network. Give it a few minutes for them to recognize each other.

If the connection is successful, the ps4 will ask you for that 8 digit code. just type it on and choose LINK

Once the linking is successful, you will get this prompt saying ENJOY THE REMOTE PLAY and up to 4 players can join in by pressing the OPTION button on a controller

You will see that the dashboard on the ps4 now resembles the dashboard of the ps5.

In my case, I am controlling the ps5 remotely using my ps4 as a proxy with my ps4 controller.

There is hardly any lag that i can detect but i suppose it depends on your internet connection if this would be an issue

Going back to the ps5, i can still control the ps5 with the ps4 controller
as of this recording, this is the only way that I know that the ps5 can recognize the ps4 controller. At least it works

Back to the ps4, while the ps4 is still serving as a proxy for the ps5, you can switch back to the ps4 by doing the following. With the ps4 controller, press the PS button in the middle and it will show you a few selections.

Choosing disconnect will unlink your ps4 and ps5 entirely. Choosing home will switch you back to the ps4 dashboard and vice versa.
