Getting unwanted spam text messages on your cell phone can be annoying and scary. As soon as you identify a text message as spam, you can easily report it to your cellular provider and the FCC by sending that message and phone number to a specific short code. While you'll never know whether any action was taken against the spammer, and you'll still have to block that number separately to prevent getting messages from them going forward, you can rest assured knowing you've done as much as you can in raising awareness around their questionable activities.
Now let's walk through the steps to report an unwanted spam text message to both your cell phone carrier and the FCC on your iPhone or Android smartphone.
Step 1. Launch your smartphone's messaging app, and then tap to open the spam text message you want to report.
Step 2. Hold your finger against the unwanted text message to bring up a dialog box. I'm doing this on my iPhone, but you'll also see a dialog box on your Android that will give you the option you need.
Step 3. Tap to copy that message. You'll also want to make a note of the phone number that sent you the unwanted spam text message.
Step 4. Open a new message window like you're sending a text message to someone, and enter "7726" in the To field.
Step 5. Paste your copied message into the body of the Text Message field, and then tap to send that message to the 7726 number. You'll automatically get a message back from your cellular data provider thanking you for sharing the content of an unwanted text message with them, and prompting you for the phone number that message came from.
Step 6. Enter the phone number that sent you the spam message you just reported, and then tap to send that message to the 7726 number. You'll get another message thanking you for sending this information. You've successfully reported that spam text to your carrier and the FCC.
