How to run Zoo Tycoon on Steam Deck (Tutorial)
8Step-by-step instructions:
1. Enter Desktop Mode
2. Get an installed copy of Zoo Tycoon onto your Steam Deck.
(I would recommend copying the install folder from another PC with a USB drive. But you CAN install directly onto your Steam deck from the original Game Disc(s), if you have an external DVD drive.
To do this you'll need to add setup.exe from the Game Disc(s) to Steam so you can run the installer through Proton.)
3. Replace zoo.exe in Zoo Tycoon's install folder with a No CD patched zoo.exe (No CD patches for retro PC games are very easy to find with a quick google search).
4. Add zoo.exe to Steam, and under it's Steam Properties click Compatibility and check the box to force the use of Proton when launching it from Steam (Proton Experimental worked fine for me).
5. Delete the intro videos from the games Install Folder that play when launching the game.(MSLOGO.AVI, MSLOGO.WMV, BFLOGO.AVI, BFLOGO.WMV) These videos do not work on Steam Deck anyway, and will actually cause the game to freeze on launch when trying to run the game in Gaming Mode.
6. You're done! Go back to Gaming Mode and now you can launch zoo.exe from Steam to play Zoo Tycoon on your Steam Deck.
